Private Herbert Broomhead was born in the autumn of 1895 and baptised at Fulwood in January 1896. He was the youngest child of 13 born to Rosalia (nee Marsden) and Samuel. The family lived and worked at Mayfield House Farm at the time Herbert was born but had moved to a small holding in Ringinglow by 1901.
In 1911, Herbert was living on Carterknowle Road with Walter Twigg and his family. Twigg was a dairy farmer and Herbert, at 15, was a farm hand.
Herbert joined the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry but was with 1/5th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry by late1916
He was killed in action on 8th November 1916 a month after his 21st birthday and is commemorated at the Thiepval Memorial and on the memorial at Fulwood
